Labour Department: Comply with regulations─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 12:46 Wed, 07 Sep 2022
The Department of Employment and Labour has warned North West municipalities to comply with the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Disease Act, or face penalties.
The warning follows a two-day seminar hosted by the Compensation Fund in partnership with the North West Department of Cooperative Governance and traditional Affairs (COGTA), and the South African Local Government Association (SALGA)
The Director at Employer Services, Bheki Ngcobo, expressed concern that compliance by North West municipalities stands at 18%.
20 out of 22 municipalities were registered with the Compensation Fund (CF). Of 267 municipalities in the country, only 55% comply with the Act. Ngcobo added employers have the obligation to register with the fund as soon as they employ one or more employees. They must also accurately declare the nature of their business, and report all accidents in the workplace.
Meanwhile provincial Acting Chief Director for COGTA, Elizabeth Mmutle, urged municipalities to comply and pay employees what is due to them.
Ngcobo adds the seminar targeted municipal officials such as Municipal managers, Chief Financial Officers and officials responsible for Corporate Services and Human Resources.
