457 title deeds were handed over to the community of Maokeng in Kroonstad, Free State, by the provincial Department of Human Settlements and the Moqhaka Local Municipality.

According to the department’s official social media page, residents were first given a consumer education briefing on how to take care of their houses.

The briefing - held on 29 September 2022 at Constantia Hall by the department and the municipality - also focused on the significance of a title deed. Residents were also given some insight on the responsibilities of government and theirs where housing is concerned.

Most of the recipients of the title deeds were elderly individuals. They were advised to have a will drafted to prohibit any family disputes in future over their homes.

Mangaung residents have previously also been presented with title deeds by the Deputy Minister of Human Settlement, Pamela Tshwete, alongside MEC for Human Settlements, Mxolisi Dukwana, and the Deputy Mayor of Mangaung, Mapaseka Nkoane.

The handover formed part of the execution of outstanding issues pertaining to the post-Presidential Imbizo that took place earlier in 2022.

Minister of Human Settlement, Moloko Kubayi, had previously acknowledged that her department had received a report of unfinished projects and as a result, many residents are left stranded after being placed on the waiting list.

Kubayi had also said that the department will have to re-allocate some of the money for unfinished projects in Mangaung so that residents get their houses.

This follows after OFM News reported that Kubayi had vowed to deal with lingering issues of housing and subsidies in Mangaung.
