The Young Nurses Indaba Trade Union (Ynitu) has raised frustrations over the increasing cases of gender-based violence (GBV) after one of their members was murdered.

The frustrations raised by the union come after reports of nurse Iris Mamotlakana Mohokare, who was found murdered on 12 October 2022 at her home in Schweizer-Reneke.

The Secretary General of Ynitu, Lerato Mthunzi, says the 47-year-old nurse was allegedly raped. Her body was found in a pool of blood after her throat had been cut. Mthunzi says they are shocked by the incident and called on law enforcement agencies to deal with the perpetrator.

"This nurse was working in one of our clinics in North West. The suspect has confessed and he is currently under police custody. We wish to send our deepest condolences to the family of Mamotlakana Moharake and also to her colleagues. We plead with the police department that the perpetrator should not be let off and should also be refused bail so that he can face the might of the law," she adds.

Meanwhile, OFM News reported that the suspect, Bongani Shebi, has since appeared in the Schweizer-Reneke Magistrate’s Court and was remanded in custody until his next court date on Monday 24 October 2022.

Mthunzi further expresses her frustrations about the victimisation of healthcare workers and claims that nurses are robbed and raped while on duty. She says they demand the police do more to ensure the safety of women at work.
