A Free State-based traffic officer has been fined after pleading guilty to corruption.

The 32-year-old Milsa Kgoma appeared before the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Friday 21 October 2022. According to the Hawks spokesperson in the Free State, Christopher Singo, Kgoma, with her co-accused, Lefa Ntlangoe, patrolled in Bultfontein on 22 April 2022. Kgoma and Ntlangoe stopped a truck and found that the license disc had expired. Singo adds that the two traffic officers then demanded R1500 from the driver, who then sought assistance from the police. He explains that a sting operation was then conducted by the SAPS’ Hawks team, together with the K9 Unit, all based in Bloemfontein, where the duo was finally arrested. He says the two traffic officers were found in possession of R1500 they had demanded from the victim.

Singo says Kgoma was sentenced to a fine of R20 000 which she has to pay with a monthly instalment of R2000, or two years of direct imprisonment. The trial against Ntlangoe is still ongoing and he is expected to appear before the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court on 7 November 2022.

Meanwhile, charges of corruption, fraud and theft against two other Mangaung Metro traffic officers were cleared by the regional court in Bloemfontein in the Free State on 18 October 2022. This after the lack of evidence against the duo. The Legal Aid SA representative in Bloemfontein, Machini Matlou, who represented Martha Retselisitswe (known as Mamoruti), had raised concerns over the damaged reputation of his client.
