Motorists to be vigilant after closure of Maselspoort Road | News Article

The primary link road, the A40 between Bloemfontein and Maselspoort in the Free State, will be closed until further notice after a dangerous sinkhole was discovered nearby.

The spokesperson for the Department of Police, Roads and Transport (DPRT), Hillary Mophete, hereby informs motorists that the road is closed because bridge number 1110 over the Renosterspruit at Kopano Nokeng is showing signs of distress following the development of a sinkhole nearby.

“The road is closed until further notice.”

The following alternative routes can be used:

  • Motorists who are travelling locally (Bloemfontein) can only use the A40 road up to Kopano Nokeng.
  • Motorists travelling to Maselspoort are advised to use the N8 up to the Eden Butchery and then proceed into Dreyer Avenue (Secondary Road SS376) until they reach the Maselspoort Road again.

Road signs are in place to direct motorists.

Furthermore, an owner of a river house close by, Aneen du Plessis, says there is a bit of a detour that the visitors have to take, but at least the detour isn't too far, as long as it keeps everyone safe.

“I don't think the road's sinkhole will affect us too much, although I can't speak for everyone,” she said.

The department aims to address this issue as a matter of urgency and apologises for the inconvenience caused by the closure of the A40 "but it is deemed necessary to ensure the safety of our road users".
