The newly elected ANC’s upper structure in the North West has come to the defence of the embattled party president and South African president, Cyril Ramaphosa.

The defence of Ramaphosa by the ANC’s Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) comes after former statesmen, including Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma, launched a scathing attack on a sitting president on the alleged failure of his leadership.

Over the weekend, Zuma described President Ramaphosa as corrupt whilst Mbeki bemoaned the collapse of state-owned entities or parastatals like the ailing power utility Eskom and Passenger rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa). However, in the defence of Ramaphosa, the ANC North West provincial Secretary, Louis Diremelo, says the party is shocked by the public attack by former presidents against the current and sitting President Ramaphosa. Diremelo says the past weekend's attacks represent a low key in the history of the party and cannot be allowed to continue.

“The expectation we have as members of the ANC is to derive their wisdom inside Constitutional structures of the movement, where they serve and are given space to articulate any form of displeasure or even pleasure in the collective leadership. Our movement has been sitting at a critical point since its existence and it cannot afford any of us to contribute to its weakening. As we rebuild and renew our movement, our leaders, whom we continue to respect, are required not to behave in a manner that would ordinarily be relegated to imbecile utterances of the opposition, as represented by some young man from Limpopo,” Diremelo adds.

OFM News previously reported that Ramaphosa has yet again found himself in hot water over the use of state resources to attend an ANC event. The Democratic Alliance's (DA) Member of Parliament (MP), George Michalakis, has reported Ramaphosa to the office of the acting Public Protector (PP), Nompilo Kholeka Gcalake, for the use of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to attend an ANC event held in the Free State recently.

The event called Letsema Campaign was held in Welkom a few weeks ago.
