North West protests momentarily disrupt second day of NSC exams─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 11:38 Wed, 02 Nov 2022
Community protests in the North West province have momentarily disrupted the second day of the National Senior Certificate (NSC) exam.
The provincial Education spokesperson, Elias Malindi, says on Tuesday morning 1 November 2022, five schools were affected by the massive protest action by taxi drivers in Zeerust, which resulted in blockaded roads in the entire town. He adds that learners started to write the Economics Paper at 10:00 due to the protest. Despite the delays caused by the strike on Tuesday and the recent hail storm in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District - which resulted in the roofs of four schools being blown off a few days before the start of the final matric examination - Malindi says the department is satisfied with the progress registered by schools in the province.
"So far I am truly satisfied with the progress registered by the province. All our schools have written successfully on the first and the second day. The challenges of storm damage experienced in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District and the taxi protest could not deter our province from writing the examinations. I would like to appeal to our communities to allow learners space to write their examination without any distractions. As a province, we have a target to achieve and we want learners to be given a fair chance to make us proud,” he said.
Malindi further adds that the Education MEC, Mmaphefo Matsemela, has assigned inspectors to assess the extent of damage caused by the storm in schools. He concluded by stating that Matsemela monitored the writing of examinations at Onkgopotse Tiro Technical and Ikageleng Technical Schools near Zeerust on Tuesday.
