A government official is set to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court this afternoon after the SAPS' Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Unit, or Hawks, arrested him for the misuse of a state petrol card in Bloemfontein on Friday.

According to the Hawks spokesperson, Christopher Singo, the suspect is 48 years old and when the Director of Public Prosecutions' (DPP) offices in Bloemfontein underwent a preliminary audit in April 2022, they found some questionable transactions that had been handled at a filling station there.

“They discovered that the suspect was using the petrol card to pour diesel into his private vehicle. It is alleged that at the time he was using the petrol card, the vehicle was at the garage for repair. The suspect is responsible for fleet and assets at the DPP's office,” he said.

It is expected that more than R100 000 was spent on fuel. This occurred between December 2020 and 31 October 2022.

He added that the matter was reported to the Hawks for further investigations, which culminated in the arrest of the suspect.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Local Magistrate's Court this afternoon where he will be facing charges of fraud.
