EFF predicts growth following People's Assembly in Free State─── BAMBATHA GIKO 11:54 Fri, 04 Nov 2022
The EFF hopes its third provincial People’s Assembly will help it to achieve its target of 55 000 Free State members by December.
Provincial Secretary, Malefane Msimang, says they’ve shown significant growth. By the second provincial conference, in 2018, they had 25 000 members. It now has 44 000 members.
He says the party managed to reduce the ANC’s support below 50% in the Metsimaholo Local Municipality, Moqhaka Local Municipality as well as Fezile Dabi District Municipality.
“What used to be power regions of the ANC - where a number of premiers come from - we managed as the EFF to humble the ANC,” Msimang says.
Meanwhile, the University of the Free State’s political analyst, Dr Sethulego Matebesi, says it’s unlikely that the EFF will see a dramatic increase in electoral support. However, he predicts the party may enjoy a 3 – 5 percentage point increase.
He adds that the EFF’s goal to gain 55 000 members by December is not farfetched, since the party has shown growth while many others are slowly losing support.
“It’s almost guaranteed that the EFF is a party that will not shed many electoral support, irrespective of the political configurations that will play out in 2024,” Matebesi says.
