Parts of the Kroonstad-based Moqhaka Local Municipality in the Free State remain without power following recent outages.

The municipal spokesperson, Dika Kheswa, said electrical faults caused the power cuts at one of the substations. He, however, added that he expects the electrical supply to be back later on Wednesday 23 November 2022 in some areas, due to the load of work that still needs to be carried out. According to him, the power has been out since Tuesday.

“Electricity supply is currently interrupted in some of the Kroonstad areas, including Uitsig, Jordania Park, Tuinhof, La Porte Vas, and Kroondustria. The interruption results from a faulty mini substation, a cable fault, and a faulty transformer. We really apologise for the inconvenience caused by this interruption,” said Kheswa.

Auditor-General (AG) Tsakani Maluleke, in her recent report, raised some of her concerns with Free State municipalities, including Moqhaka.

In her latest report, she said most municipalities struggled to perform preventative maintenance and safeguard their infrastructure assets, because they spent only 1% of their infrastructure value on repairs and maintenance, compared to the norm of 8%.
