North West Transport Department scrutinized during SCOPA hearing | News Article

The North West Transport Department is being scrutinized this afternoon during a public hearing held by the Provincial Legislature's Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA).

This follows the release of a report by the auditor general on the department.

Auditor-General (AG) Tsakani Maluleke explains, among other things, how the department failed to submit its financial statements for the financial year ending 31 March 2020 to be audited.

She says this indicates a lack of accountability and transparency. Maluleke says this is also contrary to the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA).

“By 30 September 2022, no response had been received following the notification issued. We are in the process of deciding on the further action to be taken,” Maluleleke added.

Legislature spokesperson, Namhla Luhabe, says the committee is holding a hearing with North West Transport Investment over the 2021/22 audit report, and to seek clarity on questions emanating from the Auditor General’s report.

“The Board and senior management of the North West Transport Investment together with MEC for the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, Sello Lehari, and senior management of the department are expected to attend the oversight meeting,’ Luhabe concluded.
