Man in cuffs for brutal murder of young partner in Free State─── LUCKY NKUYANE 08:18 Thu, 08 Dec 2022
The so-called pandemic of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) continues to raise its ugly head in the Free State.
A 41-year-old man was apprehended by the police whilst on the run in Odendaalsrus after he brutally killed his 25-year-old partner.
Police spokesperson, Thabo Covane, says according to information at their disposal, the suspect dosed the victim with petrol and set her alight. The woman later died after she was rushed to a nearby hospital in Thaba Nchu where the incident took place. The suspect was arrested in Odendaalsrus after police successfully traced him. He was using the deceased's phone to log into social media networks and this led to his arrest. He is set to appear in the Selosesha Magistrate's Court soon on a charge of murder.
"On Monday 5 December 2022, at about 06:00, a passer-by saw an African female engulfed with flames in Milner Street - Thaba Nchu. The lady rushed to the police station and alerted the police about the incident. The members at the Community Service Centre responded to the complaint and on arrival discovered a badly burnt female who managed to inform them that her partner doused her with petrol and then set her alight," Covane says.
This murder comes a few days after the provincial police management released statistics on crimes recorded in the province. GBV was cited among the growing cases in the province.
Premier Sisi Ntombela recently launched the 16 days of activism campaign against gender-based violence - focusing mainly on men and boys - at an event held in Modderpoort in the province.
