North West protesters accused of public violence get bail─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 08:03 Wed, 04 Jan 2023
Four protesters accused of public violence have been granted bail by the Christiana Magistrate's Court in North West.
The 21-year-old Kgothatso Misike, 31-year-old Clifford Mokoena, 41-year-old Vuyani Bulawa and 38-year-old Brenda Booysen were arrested in December 2022.
According to Henry Mamothame of the North West National Prosecuting Authority, the four accused were part of a group of Christiana community members who blocked the road between Christiana and Jan Kempdorp with stones and burning tyres.
It's alleged that the community protest resulted from poor service delivery in the area. Mamothame further alleges that the protesters subsequently moved to the N12 highway where they also blocked the road with burning tyres and stones.
Following police investigations, the four suspects were eventually apprehended on 29 December 2022.
Mokoena, Misikile, Booysen and Bulawa appeared before the Christiana Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, 3 January 2023 and were each granted R500 bail.
Mamothame concludes that the four accused are scheduled to appear in court again in late February.
