The spokesperson of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs in North West, Dineo Thapelo, explained that a group of angry contract workers whose contracts were terminated reported for duty on Wednesday morning 4 January 2023 and went on a rampage. She said the group thrashed official documents which they collected from municipal offices. Official documents that were destroyed and disposed of were seen strewn on the streets of Lichtenburg on Wednesday. Thapelo added that Cogta MEC, Nono Manyoni, condemned the incident in the strongest possible terms.

“MEC Maloyi said it is unfortunate that the workers reacted in that manner and has called for stricter security measures to be put in place in all municipal buildings. We will not tolerate this kind of behaviour, be it from officials, councillors, or members of the public. We will bring law enforcement agencies to enforce law and order in Ditsobotla if necessary,” Thapelo concluded.
