The 75-year-old Danie Coetzee, who was kidnapped by a Marxist splinter group in Paraguay, was found dead on Friday.
They allegedly demanded $300,000 for his release.
Coetzee's body was reportedly found very close to his home on his farm near the town of Colonia.
His wife Martie shared the sad news with his family here shortly after 17:00 South African time.
His brother in Pretoria, Marius Coetzee, also announced the bad news on Danie's Facebook page.
Coetzee, an ex-Free Stater who farmed on the farm Vaalspruit at Smithfield until 1993 and who has farmed in Paraguay for the last 30 years, is the father-in-law of Daan Human, the ex-Springbok prop and currently scrum coach for the Springboks.
