Matjhabeng residents plunged into darkness due to vandalism─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 09:32 Fri, 03 Mar 2023
Residents of Bronville, Welkom, in the Matjhabeng Local Municipality, have been informed to prepare to spend several days in total darkness.
The electricity supply station in their area was vandalised on Thursday.
The Matjhabeng Local Municipality has recently been challenged with vandalism issues, which had also negatively impacted the area's water supply. Two months back, Matjhabeng Mayor, Thanduxolo Khalipha, told OFM News the municipality had planned to beef up security as they were starting with their infrastructure projects. Khalipha stated that some of the infrastructure in Matjhabeng was destroyed by zama-zamas and others who referred to themselves as business people.

Meanwhile, municipal spokesperson, Tshediso Tlali, said the vandalised station in Bronville will cost the municipality millions to fix. This, after explaining that residents will be without electricity for days to come.
“Matjhabeng Local Municipality strongly denounced the continuous vandalism and theft of our infrastructure and equipment that is taking place around Matjhabeng areas.
"The substation in Bronville was vandalised early in the morning and cables were stolen, resulting in a loss of revenue and a huge cost of replacement for the municipality. The cost of this vandalism amounts to more than R4 million.”
Tladi said these acts of criminality have a massive negative impact on the daily lives of residents, businesses, hospitals and the economy of Matjhabeng at large. He further urged the community of Bronville to exercise patience as the municipality is working around the clock to ensure that electricity is restored in the area.
“We wish to encourage all residents to partner with the municipality to curb all criminal activities, vandalism, and acts of sabotage against municipal infrastructure. We also wish to apologise to the community of Bronville and plead with them to exercise their utmost patience at this time,” concluded Tlali.
