Bringing cinema to your door step

Bloemfontein residents can look forward to a film festival later this month at the Civic Theatre.

Over the course of two days, 23 and 24 March 2023, two domestic feature films and a feature-length documentary made in the country will be shown.

The creator of 1976 Films and a filmmaker with experience in the television and film industries with a base in Bloemfontein, Mpho Tau, came up with the idea for the event.

According to Tau, Bringing Cinema, To Your Door Step is a project that aims to promote and develop a culture of watching fiction and non-fiction films from the Free State, especially Bloemfontein, that are created in South Africa and other African countries.

“This year is our first edition of Bringing Cinema, To Your Door Step,” he added.

Due to a lack of places and platforms for prospective filmmakers to exhibit their work or benefit from the interest generated in the industry, the film and television industries in the Free State province have long suffered.

Tau's idea will thereby encourage the film industry to flourish in the Free State, and more specifically in Bloemfontein. The province's film industry will be revitalised by this programme.

He aims to spark interest in the filmmaking industry and provide local filmmakers with a stage on which to present their work and build audiences.

“The idea is to develop audiences so that in the future when we want to do a Bloemfontein international film festival, the audience would have been developed and the culture of consuming films created in African countries and in South Africa exists,” he explained.

Filmmakers from all over the nation will present their work and interact with aspiring local filmmakers, offering advice on how to get started in the business.

Tau now has the chance to close the gap between local filmmakers and audiences after being a part of organisations like the Independent Black Filmmakers Collective, Independent Producers Organisation, and the Documentary Filmmakers Association.

The Mangaung community, local schools, varsity students, and local filmmakers are all welcome. Admission is free, but reservations are recommended from Mpho Tau at 078-218-3012.
