Over the past few weeks, the South African National Blood Service held the Egg-stra Mile Challenge, during which they encouraged their donors and stakeholders to go the extra mile by donating blood.
They anticipate challenges over the next week and the Easter period, which is why they have planned additional Egg-stra Mile donor drives for Saturday, 25 March 2023. SANBS hopes to collect 180 units of blood.
Help SANBS reach their target of 180 donations by giving the gift of life at your closest donor centre or donor drive on Saturday:
Vereeniging, Riversquare donor centre: 09:00 to 14:00
Oranjeville, Vertoef Pub and Grill: 10:00 to 14:00
Vaal Mall: 09:00 to 16:00
Sasolburg Square: 09:00 to 14:00
Pulane Nel-Sekepe spoke to Shivanie Lutchman, SANBS Donor Relations Practitioner in Vereeniging, about why you should make your life-saving contribution this weekend. Listen here:
All blood groups are required to ensure adequate stocks at all times, however Group O Rh negative blood can be transfused to anyone, so these donors are referred to as “universal donors”. Group O Rh negative patients, on the other hand, can only receive group O Rh negative blood. Group O blood is the most versatile, and adequate stocks of group O blood are vital. If for instance, group A blood is not in stock, group O blood will be used.
You one unit of blood can save up to three lives. Every unit of blood, once tested and deemed safe for transfusion, is separated into red blood cells, platelets and plasma. In South Africa, less than 1% of donors are active donors. A unit of blood only lasts 42 days after donation and it for this reason that SANBS urges new and repeat donors to commit to donating blood regularly.
