A 37-year-old police officer and a 34-year-old woman died on Monday after being hit by a truck on the N1 outside Kroonstad while attending to another accident.
The Free State police spokesperson, Stephen Thakeng, said the tragedy took place at 18:15 on 17 April 2023 after Kroonstad police were called to the accident scene. This accident took place 15km towards Kroonstad from Ventersburg.
He explained that the Fezile Dabi District Highway patrol members attended to the accident and discovered that it involved only two vehicles – a white Ford Ranger bakkie and a Volvo truck.
Thakeng added that while the police were assisting with the regulation of traffic, a white Isuzu truck ploughed through the accident scene, hitting the police officer and a female passenger, who is allegedly from the white Ford Ranger. They were certified dead on the scene by emergency medical workers.
Thakeng said the police are investigating two culpable homicide cases and no one has been arrested yet.
Meanwhile, the Provincial Commissioner, Baile Motswenyane, expressed her sadness following the incident.
“This morning we woke up to the sad news of the passing on of one of our members in the line of duty. When police officers leave their homes to report on duty there is always a possibility that they will not see their loved ones again. This reality of what happened last night hits hard. I want to express my deepest condolences to the loved ones, friends, family, and colleagues of the Sergeant, as well as to the innocent member of the public,” says Motswenyane.
