Magalies Water refutes allegations of 'worms in water' | News Article

Magalies Water, which provides bulk water services to municipalities, mining operations and industrial customers in North West, has set the record straight following allegations that the water supplied by them was "infested with worms".

According to the entity's spokesperson, David Magae, the final laboratory results have revealed that claims about worms are not substantiated. This was after irate residents of Mathibestad in the Moretele Municipality questioned the quality of the water supplied by Magalies Water.

Magae says laboratory results validate and confirm the credibility of Magalies Water as a reputable bulk water services provider.

"Given the sensitivities and associated risks with water treatment distributed for human consumption, Magalies Water undertook a full investigation to determine the validity of the complaint and to detect any system or process-related defects, which otherwise could compromise the health of the communities who consume water from our plant," he says.

Magae says following the allegations, Magalies Water’s laboratory services were dispatched to Mathibestad, where the complaints were predominantly coming from.

"In line with industry standards, Magalies Water conducts regular testing and analysis of its bulk water output in all its areas of service to ensure that potable water distributed to its bulk customers meets and exceeds the set norms and standards at all material times.

"The water distributed to Moretele Municipality, is produced from the Klipdrift Water Treatment Plant (WTP), which during the month of April 2023 was assessed and, based on the obtained laboratory water quality results, was found to be compliant. The water in the system did not present health risks or indicate the presence of worms.

"As part of Magalies Water’s quality assurance process, further investigations were conducted on 21 and 24 April 2023 within the bulk water distribution network (pipeline strainers) and no worms were detected," says Magae.

"The water of Mathibestad is safe for human consumption. We urge residents to regularly disinfect the apparatus they use in their households, including hosepipes, to prevent a situation where worms or other foreign objects or organisms may be found."
