Deputy President Paul Mashatile.

Deputy-President, Paul Mashatile, has been challenged to conduct an oversight visit across the Free State.

The request by the DA comes in the wake of his visit to Jagersfontein.

A mine dam wall collapse in September last year left more than 200 people destitute, over 100 houses damaged and two people dead. On person remains missing.

Mashatile announced on Tuesday government will help to revive the town’s economy by creating job opportunities and bringing in investors.

The Department of Agriculture has earmarked R4 million for agricultural purposes in Kopanong to assist small-scale farmers who lost some of their livestock, animal feed, water reticulation and fencing.

Meanwhile, DA Provincial leader Roy Jankielsohn welcomed Mashatile’s visit, and stated it was long overdue. He also challenged Mashatile to travel on provincial roads and visit other towns across the province to see the devastating lack of services in various municipalities.

Jankheilson further stated that during their recent visit to Jagersfontein revealed the community is still receiving little to no municipal services.

Mashatile informed residents that Bloem Water reduced water levels to 30% due to the R600 million debt owed by the Kopanong Local Municipality.

The Kopanong municipality will be placed under administration. Jankielsohn meanwhile says if the provincial government is going to assist Kopanong in writing off debt to Bloem Water, then other municipalities should receive similar assistance.
