The North West Health MEC, Madoda Sambatha, announced on Tuesday during his budget speech, held at the Provincial Legislature in Mmabatho, plans to rename health facilities in the province.
More than five health facilities will be renamed. In the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality the Gelukspan District Hospital, will after refurbishment be known as the Prof. Mokhobo Hospital.
Sambatha said after adding a hundred beds to address the challenges of space at the Mahikeng Provincial Hospital, the new name will be Kgosi Dick Montshioa Hospital, in honour of the Chief of Barolong.
"Nic Bodenstein Hospital in Wolmaransstad, will also receive more beds, this is as patient referrals from Ottosdal will now be directed to the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District due to geographical barriers," said Sambatha.
Ditsobotla-based General De la Rey District Hospital will be renamed after the late North West premier Edna Molewa, whilst the Itsoseng community health centre is being upgraded to become a district hospital, replacing the Thusong Hospital due to dolomitic conditions in the area.
OFM News learned that the Klerksdorp/Tshepong Hospital complex will also be renamed after former health MEC Dr Molefi Sefularo, and it will be now called Dr Molefi Sefularo hospital complex.
A clinic in Mfidikwe Village, which is under construction and will be open in December 2023, will be renamed after the Cuban-trained medical doctor who died a month ago, Dr Keabetswe Ramoka.
