The North West Department of Education said it is shocked by the death of a Grade 11 learner (18) from Rustenburg's Technical High School, who was allegedly stabbed to death at the Rustenburg Taxi Rank.

The provincial Education spokesperson, Mphata Molokwane, said the MEC, Viola Motsumi, expressed her sadness regarding the incident, especially the manner in which a young life was lost after school hours.

OFM News previously reported about the death of the learner who was allegedly stabbed in a gang fight which took place at the local taxi rank. This allegedly followed a quarrel between two learners at the school earlier on Friday 2 June 2023. Police were then summoned, responded immediately to the incident, and started with their initial investigations. The suspect was subsequently arrested.

On Monday 5 June 2023, Dintle Blessing Tladi (19) appeared in court, and his case was postponed to 12 June 2023 for legal representation.

The North West National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Henry Mamothame, informed OFM News that Tladi is facing a charge of murder after allegedly stabbing the other learner to death.

Furthermore, Dintle is also facing two charges of attempted murder. Mamothame says the investigation continues, while he remains in police custody.

Meanwhile, Molokwane says Motsumi has called for learners to refrain from any violence and misconduct outside school premises. Motsumi also called on parents and guardians to join hands with the police and educators, to ensure schools remain a safe environment.

She conveyed her condolences to the family, friends and fellow learners of the deceased.
