The Deputy Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Thabang Makwetla.

The Deputy Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Thabang Makwetla, says some of the houses built for military veterans in Hillside View, in Bloemfontein, were awarded to the wrong people.

Free State Premier, Mxolisi Dukwana, had raised concerns over suspected corrupt officials in the Free State Human Settlements Department who allegedly colluded with officials from the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality to manipulate the Hillside View housing beneficiary list.

This was during his sting operation in October last year to determine the authenticity of occupants in 15 houses that were carefully selected. Speaking to the media outside one of the military veteran houses in Hillside View on Tuesday, Makwetla said they now have to follow a process of ensuring that beneficiaries of the military housing projects are indeed military veterans.

“We have a situation where here and there, the lines were bridged and we have in the houses that we have handed out, people who are not military veterans. We have to address that problem. We also have a problem,” he said.

Makwetla revealed that over 2 200 houses have been delivered to military veterans across the country since the beginning of the programme. In the Free State, 133 housing units have been delivered in various municipalities. The total number of houses the Free State has to deliver to properly verified military veterans beneficiaries is 204. Makwetla said his department is working together with the department and will challenge themselves to complete the military veterans housing project within these two financial years.
