Troubled North West municipality elects opposition mayor─── LUCKY NKUYANE 07:30 Sat, 10 Jun 2023
The troubled Lichtenburg-based Ditsobotla Local Municipality in the North West has elected an opposition mayor.
Forum 4 Service Delivery (F4SD) councillor Thabo Janto was elected as the mayor on Thursday during a council sitting.
Janto was elected uncontested and received 20 votes. 17 council members, including 14 ANC members, 2 Patriotic Alliance (PA) and 1 council member boycotted the sitting.
The municipality has recently been hit with financial constraints and service delivery issues which even led to businesses leaving the area.
In 2021, the Clover company shut down the cheese factory and left. They blamed the municipality for its failure to maintain infrastructure and to deal with water and power shedding over the past few years.

This was after the municipality had two mayors and two municipal managers at loggerheads.
OFM News previously reported that the municipality alleged that one of the two managers, who was not elected by the council, allegedly had access to the banking system of the municipality. This created trouble for the municipality's financial stability.
