Residents of Mangaung face possible water cuts after pipe burst─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 15:38 Mon, 12 Jun 2023
A pipe burst at Polyhymna Street in Baysvalley, Bloemfontein, has left residents stranded as they may be subjected to constant water supply challenges.
DA ward 21 councillor in the ailing metro, Pieter Lotriet, told OFM News that the main supply pipeline burst in Baysvalley and the metro reduced the water flow to about 20% capacity to allow residents to still get some water.
He alleges that Mangaung Metro workers were supposed to start repairs on the pipeline that had burst at 11:30 but no work has commenced.
“It is a big task and it will probably take the best part of a working day, subject to the availability of spare parts on inventory. Communications with the metro is very difficult including with HOD Wallace McLeod and the acting mayor,” he said.
Lotriet says residents who reside in the affected area must prepare for discomfort for as long as it is going to take the metro to repair the pipe.
“What we know is that the metro's already low capacity is fully stretched considering the dilapidated water infrastructure and the toll the cold weather has taken on it.”
Questions have been sent to the metro regarding the water situation.
