The bodies of two elderly women in Taung in North West have been discovered by the police and emergency personnel.
The bodies of Mmapulana Pauline Mmusi (80) and Merriam Kelebogile Mokgalagadi (59) were discovered on Friday 16 June 2023 in the field at Taung.
These bodies were severely assaulted and had serious head injuries. The two women are said to have left their homes on Thursday 15 June 2023 with the aim to collect firewood in a nearby field. Unfortunately, they never returned home.
According to police spokesperson, Adele Myburgh, the local police in Taung are requesting the community to come forth with information after the bodies were discovered in the early hours of Friday morning in Manokwane Village.
"When they did not return home after dark, their families, friends, and community members started looking for them, leading to the gruesome discovery. Both females were found dead not far from each other in the nearby field. They were both declared dead on the scene by Emergency Medical & Rescue Services (EMRS). Police are also investigating the possibility that the victims might have been raped."
Myburgh said anyone with information that can assist the police with their investigation is requested to call the police.

Meanwhile, the Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General, Sello Kwena, condemned the incident and said that the police will work around the clock to ensure that those who are responsible for this horrendous crime are brought to book.
