The elderly woman (83) whose yard in the Batho location in Bloemfontein was engulfed by raw sewage spillage has finally received help.
Her nephew, Frank Mkhuane, had informed OFM News about the hazardous conditions his aunt was forced to live in. He said that despite several attempts since February 2022 to get assistance from Mangaung Metro Municipality and the provincial government, nothing was done to fix the sewage spill.
However, on Saturday 24 June, a good Samaritan stepped up to assist the family after hearing from OFM about the appalling conditions Mkhuane’s aunt was forced to live with. Benedict Ngonela, the owner of Bene-Tech plumbing services, immediately heeded the call for help.

“The people have come on Saturday to fix the sewage, but it was not the municipality. I want to thank OFM for putting my story out there and on the radio. Somebody who read it responded to it. It was a private plumbing company that came on Saturday after seeing my humble request for people to help my aunt. The 83-year-old was living in a very horrible and bad space at the Batho location.”

“This man did come on Saturday to investigate what is happening there and then sent some people to come and check what is wrong there. He fixed that thing at his own expense,” said a happy Mkhuane.

OFM News had previously sent enquiries to the metro and provincial government about the disturbing situation. Mkhuane expressed his disappointment at the lack of efforts shown by the metro to assist his family, despite several attempts to get assistance from their offices.
He expressed his gratitude to Ngonela, who stepped in to help fix the problem.
