Drowning victim discovered but not yet identified─── ZENANDE MPAME 12:47 Fri, 30 Jun 2023
A little over a week after going missing, the body of a man who was thought to have been cast-net fishing illegally in Toronto Pan, Welkom, was found.
Security guards chased two males as they were busy fishing in the pan on 13 June 2023.
“They apparently tried to swim across the pan. One man got away, and the other drowned. The incident was reported and the police’s diving unit was summoned to search for the body but did not find anything,” said Captain Stephen Thakeng.
The lifeless body was discovered floating in the pan on Saturday (24/6). Once more, the diving squad was called to bring it in.
One of the 150 fish caught in the nets, which were being used by the two illegal fishermen, weighed roughly 10kg.
A case of inquest has been registered for further inquiry because no one has come forward to claim the deceased.
