A grandson (32) has been arrested in the Free State after police discovered that he had buried his grandmother (88) in a shallow grave in her yard in the Malekuntu Village in the Free State.

According to the Free State police, community members became anxious on 12 July 2023, after not seeing the elderly woman in her house for days. They reported her as a missing person to the police.

It's understood that the police, the community, and Anti-Stock Theft members began a massive search. Mmako Mophiring, a provincial police spokesperson, revealed during the search her grandson was found but ran away when he realised they were in search of his grandmother. The suspect was arrested later and it was established that the elderly woman was buried inside a shallow grave in her yard. Her body was exhumed and her grandson was arrested for defeating the ends of justice and violation of a corpse.

Mophiring added that the suspect claimed he buried his grandmother without informing either family members or police as there was no burial money.

Mophiring alleged that the police were informed that the elderly woman was sick and passed away. He added that the suspect claimed he buried his grandmother without even informing either family members or police as there was no burial money, even though he collected her pension money.

It was further revealed that the granny was last seen on 23 June 2023 by other family members and neighbours.

Mophiring said the postmortem is yet to be conducted to establish the cause of the elderly woman's death.
