A 24-year-old man from Moeka Vuma near Makapanstad in North West is set to appear before the Temba Magistrate’s Court for the murder of his 18-month-old baby brother.
Police spokesperson in the province, Sam Tselanyane, said the suspect had an argument with his mother (39) and grandmother (55) on the day of the incident. During the argument, he allegedly assaulted his mother and grandmother. He then grabbed his baby brother who was in the time sleeping in his bed and hit him against the floor. The police were summoned to the scene.
On arrival, the police arrested and charged the suspect with murder. The baby was declared dead on the scene. The mother and grandmother were taken to the nearest hospital for medical attention. He is also facing an additional charge of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. The motive for the incident is still unknown.
"The North West Provincial Commissioner, Sello Kwena, condemned the incident and conveyed his condolences to the family. He also commended the police for arresting the suspect. Kwena said it is sad that some men continue to commit acts of gender-based violence during Women’s Month."
