Suspects flee after bombing ATM, injuring Free State police officer | News Article

Gun-wielding suspects are on the run after bombing an ATM and shooting a police officer in the Free State.

Free State police spokesperson Stephen Thakeng said the police heard an explosion coming from Block 5 Taxi rank Thursday (10/8) morning shortly after 03:00 while they were patrolling Madika Street in Odendaasrus. Two police officers drove towards the explosion next to the Telkom Tower building, and another explosion came from that direction.

“They drove closer to the taxi rank where a group of people (had gathered). One of the suspects fired a shot at the police. (When) the two members got out of the marked police vehicle and cocked their handguns, about 15 African males fled in different directions.”

‘They disappeared in the dark’

He said the police tried to chase the suspects but they disappeared in the dark. The ATM was bombed at a supermarket next to the taxi rank in Kutloanong and no one sustained any injuries except the police officer. The vehicle was also damaged by a bullet in the driver’s seat.

Police are investigating a case of ATM bombing, attempted murder, and an attack on the police. Anyone with information is requested to contact Detective Sergeant Tauru Majoe of the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit at 071 094 0570 or the Crime Stop number 08600 10111.
