Two police officers were released on bail of R1000 each when they appeared at the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Monday (14/8).
Masixole Emsly Luyanda Nogabe (34) and Francis Lehlonoholo Sefuthi (32) were arrested on Friday (11/8) on charges of corruption, extortion, kidnapping, and defeating the ends of justice. They will be back in court on 14 September 2023.
Nogabe and Sefuthi allegedly arrested a foreign national and requested money from a friend to let him go on 7 July 2023.
The situation was communicated to the Anti-Corruption Unit. And the friend who filed the complaint was given the money and kept under close supervision as the unit went into operation.

The suspects' police vehicle was stopped by members of the Anti-Corruption Unit.
“The police constables then allegedly called the friend from the arrested person’s cellphone, telling him they would come for their money. When they arrived at the shop of the complainant, he spoke to the undercover police officials who left him with the money.”
“The police vehicle was stopped by members of the Anti-Corruption Unit and a person [the arrested foreign national] was found at the back of the police bakkie,” said Free State police spokesperson, Loraine Earle.
The policemen are from the Kagisanong Visible Policing Unit in Bloemfontein.
