Sewerage leaks a health risk for learners and residents─── ZENANDE MPAME 14:32 Wed, 23 Aug 2023
It is almost a month since raw sewage has been flowing through the streets of Brandwag in Bloemfontein and close to the schools.
The leak is situated at the Brandwag Social Housing Units and on the main lines around McHardy and Krige Streets.
“The sewage in Brandwag is a nightmare and children walk through it every day. The municipality does not seem to have an idea what to do. The stench that flows this side is a health risk for our children, especially the pre-primary children,” said the principal of Brandwag Primary, André Venter.

These leaks are not new to Mangaung residents as they are regularly exposed to sewage spills.
“This leak and hundreds of others across the metro expose residents to extremely unhealthy conditions. Unfortunately, this sewerage problem has been left unattended for close to a month,” said the DA councillor of the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality, Werner Pretorius.

Hundreds of school children, students, and residents are exposed to these conditions and are at risk.
