Brics summit sets the stage for world politics – expert─── DANE BEISHEIM 11:00 Thu, 24 Aug 2023
The current Brics summit and world events, such as India’s successful mission to the south pole of the moon, are indicative of a political change of the guard in world politics.
This is according to NWU lecturer and commentator Prof. Kedibone Phago.
He said since the end of World War II, the West has played a dominant role in world politics. It seems emerging nations are now starting to take up space previously reserved by the West.
Phago said South Africa should follow India’s example and start investing more in education and technology.

“We need to see more African countries invest in technology because it really boosts our image and collaboration with other global orders at this particular point in time.
“Furthermore, many developing countries, including our own, have been complaining to the United Nations about the use of the US dollar as the standard currency for international trade.
“The Brics platform is actually [to my mind] taking baby steps to set the tone and say ‘What can we as developing nations in the world do to work together, support one another in terms of trade and business, etc.,’ ” said Phago.
“I think we are at a very important stage of changes to the world order, and South Africa is at the forefront of that, just for hosting the Brics summit.”
