“The DA has made numerous enquiries demanding answers about several municipal or fleet vehicles that have been involved in various accidents.”

The DA in the Letsemeng Municipality is set to table a motion of no confidence against the speaker of the cash-strapped ANC-led municipality in the Free State.

This motion against Xolani Mthukwane is expected to take place Friday morning at around 09:00 at the municipal chambers.

The speaker of the Koffiefontein-based municipality confirmed to OFM News that indeed council is sitting to debate the motion of no confidence against him. The municipality has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons. OFM News previously reported that Mariska Potgieter, a DA councillor in the municipality, said they have made numerous enquiries demanding answers about several municipal or fleet vehicles that have been involved in various accidents.

The party questioned the municipality's silence on vehicles involved in accidents and the expenses incurred to repair them. The matter gained attention after a document from the speaker was made public and circulated on social media, in which he demanded a refund after an accident with a car from a rental company in Bloemfontein.

It is alleged that Mthukwane was involved in two accidents in less than two months, while on both occasions he was driving himself. OFM News earlier reported that municipal officials spent almost R200 000 on a three-day meeting in Gauteng.

An invoice given to OFM News indicated that R194 580 was spent on accommodation, flights, and car rentals for the chief whip, speaker, and councillor, who is an Executive Committee member. The three councillors of the Koffiefontein-based municipality boarded a flight from Bloemfontein to Johannesburg and rented a luxurious vehicle each to travel to Boksburg. They were there from 3 to 6 September. It's understood they attended the National Members Assembly of the South African Local Government Association.
