A 58-year-old man from North West has appeared in court for allegedly being in possession of gold bearing material.
Sam Nxumalo appeared in the Klerksdorp Magistrates' Court on Friday (10/11), on charges of being in possession of unwrought gold.
Members of the Hawks and Klerksdorp District Illicit Mining Task Team received information a day earlier about a suspect who was allegedly spotted in possession of suspected gold in the Klerksdorp CBD.
The information was followed up, and the team pounced on the suspect.
He was searched, and a gold button as well as red soil suspected to be gold bearing material were found in his possession. The team further conducted a search at the suspect's house, which led to a discovery of red, black, and grey soil suspected to be gold bearing material.
The suspect was subsequently arrested and charged with possession of unwrought gold. Following his appearance in court the matter was postponed to Wednesday (15/11) for a formal bail application.
The North West Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Major General Patrick Mbotho, has welcomed the arrest and expressed gratitude to the positive information received from an informant.
