Early Christmas gifts for Mangaung hail storm victims─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 07:06 Sun, 24 Dec 2023
“People affected by heavy rains were offered food parcels, dignity packs, blankets and clothing by provincial government and humanitarian organisations.”
The victims of the recent hail storms in Mangaung have been showered with early Christmas gifts by the Free State government.
This past week, Free State MEC for Public Works and Infrastructure Dibolelo Mance alongside Social Development Head of Department Joe Phahla handed out essentials to people who were affected by heavy rains in Mangaung Metro. Mance said it formed part of government's response to the disaster.
The outreach program for disaster relief started at Kopanong Primary School in Turflaagte, Bloemfontein, where 57 homes were identified and 195 people were assisted. Mance proceeded to Tjhebelopele Primary School where 50 homes were affected and 131 dependents were assisted. Affected people were offered food parcels, dignity packs, blankets and clothing by provincial government and humanitarian organisations.
‘The centre is aimed at restoring hope’
OFM News previously reported that more than 90 houses were heavily affected by the storms, while 250 homes were damaged at Van Stadensrus. A boy (7) died, while a woman (55) from Phase 6 and a ten-month-old baby were admitted to hospital after they suffered injuries. Mangaung Mayor Gregory Nthatisi visited affected communities to evaluate the extent of the damaged caused by hail storms and to further assist the victims.
The provincial government launched a food and clothing centre in Bloemfontein shortly after the disaster. Acting Social Development MEC Thabo Meeko said the centre is aimed at restoring hope and changing the lives of those who were harshly affected by thunderstorms and floods.
