“Setshwantsho is also being investigated for the deaths of her brother, husband, and two daughters.”

The suspected North West insurance killer appeared briefly in the Kuruman Magistrate’s Court on Thursday (1/2), and further murder and fraud charges were added to her charge sheet. She was transported back to the North West and will remain in custody until her next court appearance on Tuesday 12 March.

Agnes Setshwantsho was formally charged with the murder of her son, Kutlo Setshwantsho. She had insured him for R6 million in 2023. It is alleged she gave her son a burger laced with poison when they were travelling from Cape Town where he studied.

“The charges emanate from an incident where the accused, who had insured her child for R6 million, made an insurance claim after the passing of her child under suspicious circumstances,” said the Northern Cape NPA spokesperson, Mojalefa Senokoatsane.

‘Setshwantsho allegedly poisoned her son’

“The accused was driven from the Mafikeng Female Prison, where she is presently being kept, to Kuruman. She will be remanded in custody until her next appearance in the Kuruman Magistrate’s Court in March.”

Setshwantsho and her son stopped at a garage for food after she fetched her son in Cape Town, she allegedly bought him a burger and laced it with poison. At the time his death was said to be due to natural causes.

The North West woman appeared in the Molopo Magistrate’s Court on Friday 19 January for her bail application and was denied bail. She faces charges of murder, two of fraud, and one of defeating the ends of justice. She was arrested on Thursday 16 November and allegedly is the beneficiary of 58 insurance policies from her extended family.

‘She is remanded in custody until her next court appearance’

“Investigations are still underway regarding the alleged death threats against the state witness as well as the investigating officer,” said the North West NPA spokesperson, Henry Mamothame. “The accused will remain in police custody until the matter is concluded.”
