Opening of Legislature: Free State premier expected to earn trust, confidence of residents─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 09:05 Wed, 07 Aug 2024
“Mathae’s approach appears to be hands-on, and I hope this defines her leadership moving forward."
A political analyst from the University of the Free State (UFS) has stressed the significant task facing Premier Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae to earn the trust and confidence of Free State residents.
This is ahead of Mathae’s inaugural Opening of the Legislature speech at the Bloemfontein City Hall on Thursday (8/8). Mathae recently stepped into the role previously held by ANC provincial chairperson and Speaker of the Legislature, Mxolisi Dukwana, after being selected by the ANC NEC following the recent national elections. Her appointment has already seen a notable shift in the provincial executive, with a substantial increase in female representation in her executive council (EXCO).
UFS political analyst Prof. Sethugelo Matebesi said Mathae's leadership comes at a pivotal moment, particularly in a province where the ANC holds a slim majority and coalition politics are not currently in play.
"The President has formed a Government of National Unity, but in provinces like the Free State, where the ANC has a narrow majority, the dynamics within the leading party are becoming increasingly apparent," Matebesi said. "Mathae's approach appears to be hands-on, and I hope this defines her leadership moving forward."
Matebesi expressed his expectations for Mathae’s speech, stating that he is anticipating she will address recent changes in the provincial administration, including the reshuffling of Heads of Departments (HODs) and other key positions. He stressed the importance of Mathae communicating the rationale behind these changes to the public to foster transparency and understanding.
In addition, Matebesi said he hopes Mathae will outline concrete plans to address ongoing challenges faced by municipalities in the Free State, particularly rural areas struggling with access to clean water. Another critical area for discussion, according to Matebesi, is the province's economic development, with a focus on vital sectors such as agriculture and mining. He also highlighted the need for Mathae to address issues of consequence management, especially regarding individuals who may obstruct government and party initiatives.
The Free State provincial legislature has confirmed its preparedness for the Opening of the Legislature. Secretary for the Free State Legislature, Joseph Machaka, assured that "all systems go" for the event. The previous ceremony, held in Qwaqwa earlier this year, cost approximately R5 million, while R2.5 million has been allocated for this upcoming event.
