Investigation launched after Bloemfontein Destea head office fire─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 16:00 Tue, 17 Jun 2025

An investigation has been launched to determine the cause and extent of damage following a fire that broke out at the Department of Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (Destea) head office in Bloemfontein.
The fire, which started on the second floor of the department’s building in St Andrew Street on Tuesday (17/6), was quickly contained after a swift response by Mangaung Metro Fire and Rescue Services.
No injuries were reported, and the rest of the building remains unaffected. Only two offices were impacted by the blaze, said Destea spokesperson Mojalefa Mphapang.
Investigations have started to establish the cause of the fire and the extent of the damage caused to the parts of the floor. While the fire itself was limited, the affected area suffered notable smoke damage, Mphapang added.
As a precaution, employees have been advised to work remotely until further notice. “Staff are expected to remain accessible and responsive as required. While minor disruptions may occur, contingency plans will be implemented to ensure that service delivery continues with minimal interruption.”
Further updates will be shared as more information becomes available.
