N1 between Colesberg and Hanover open after gas truck accident─── ZENANDE MPAME 17:00 Wed, 02 Jul 2025

The stretch of road on the N1 between Colesberg and Hanover has been reopened following a gas truck that overturned on Wednesday (2/7) morning.
The road was fully closed due to a hazardous gas leak since 05:00.
The hazardous materials (hazmat) teams contained and cleaned up the gas spill. It is alleged the accident occurred when the truck driver lost control while avoiding an oncoming vehicle, causing the truck to overturn and release gas, prompting an emergency response.

“The N1 between Colesberg and Hanover has been opened after a truck accident that caused a gas spill this morning,” said Northern Cape police spokesperson Timothy Sam.
“Motorists are urged to proceed cautiously as hazmat teams are still busy with their cleanup operation.
“Further updates will be issued once new information becomes available.” Three men sustained serious injuries and were treated on the scene by emergency medical services.
‘Use designated alternative routes to ensure safety’
All relevant emergency and safety authorities were on-site and oversaw the recovery and secured the area.
SA Trucker reports that no towing has occurred as of yet because of the hazardous material’s dangerous nature. For a thorough cleanup, a hazmat service provider has been contacted.
Motorists and truck drivers were urged to use designated alternative routes to ensure their safety and avoid delays on their journeys.
