The Midvaal Municipality has invested R1.2 million in a new water purification system to ensure residents have access to safe drinking water.

Amid growing concerns over water quality and the risk of waterborne diseases nationwide, the municipality has taken proactive steps to safeguard its residents.

The funding was used to install an Automated Chlorine Dosing System at the Meyerton Reservoir, which supplies water to over 80% of the municipality.

The system automatically adjusts chlorine levels based on flow rate and continuously monitors residual chlorine concentrations.

“This new purification system ensures our residents receive water that’s 100% safe to drink,” said Midvaal Mayor, Peter Teixeira. “This is a system that not many municipalities have, but we, as Midvaal, wanted to be proactive and ensure that our water is cholera-free.”

The system provides real-time protection against microbial contamination, significantly reducing the risks of waterborne diseases like cholera. It also prevents pipeline corrosion, extending the infrastructure’s lifespan.

At the State of the Municipality Address in June, Teixeira touched on the bulk pipeline replacement programme that the municipality embarked on. “In tackling non-revenue water, we are installing chlorine booster systems to improve the quality of water supplied to the community.

“In tracking and tackling non-revenue water, the municipality makes use of smart technologies like telemetry, reticulation logging, and automatic pressure controllers to improve response times and water supply efficiency.”

Future projects include the Kookrus bulk pipeline replacement, Kliprivier bulk supply line construction, new bulk water meter installations and expanded telemetry coverage.
