Festivalgoers heading to one of South Africa’s largest arts festivals can expect a sunny week in Bloemfontein, as weather conditions look promising for the event’s start on Tuesday (15/7).

The Free State capital is unlikely to experience significant rainfall during the festival, according to the South African Weather Service (SAWS). However, attendees at the Vrystaat Arts Festival are advised to dress warmly due to breezy conditions.

While skies are expected to mostly remain clear, temperatures will be on the lower side, said SAWS senior forecaster Tokelo Chilwane. “We are not expecting much in terms of rainfall or anything like that.

“At most, we’re just expecting very low minimum temperatures, and when we look at the maximum, it’s just going to be in the high teens. Yeah, a bit of wind here and there, but nothing significant for the coming week in Bloemfontein or the entire Free State.”

She said temperatures on Monday (14/7) are expected to reach a maximum of 21 °C. Tuesday, when the festival officially begins, will see similar conditions with a maximum of 22 °C and a minimum of around 6 °C. While rainfall is not anticipated, Chilwane cautioned about breezy conditions.

Expected 7-day outlook by AfriWx for Monday 14 July to Sunday 20 July 2025:

BLOEMFONTEIN

Mon??  7 | 20°C

Tue??  6 | 21°C

Wed??  6 | 21°C

Thu??  8 | 22°C

Fri??  8 | 18°C

Sat??  7 | 20°C

Sun??  8 | 21°C

“We are not expecting much in terms of rainfall or anything like that … a bit of wind here and there but nothing significant.”

Elsewhere in the country, SAWS predicts partly cloudy conditions in the eastern and southern regions, with isolated showers expected along the south coast and the eastern half of the Eastern Cape.

Damaging winds are possible in the eastern parts of the Northern Cape. Along the east coast, isolated showers are likely on Tuesday, though most inland regions, including the Free State, will remain dry.
