The University of the Free State (UFS) invites the public to its High School Choir Festival, which will include a performance from the UFS Bloemfontein Campus Choir and five school choirs.

The festival, to be held in the Odeion on Tuesday, 12 August, will be a musical celebration bringing together some of the most talented high school choirs from across Bloemfontein, including St Andrew’s School Choir, St Michael’s Chapel Choir, Sekondêre Meisieskool Oranje, and Eunice Vitae Cantamus Choir.

Audience members can expect an unforgettable musical journey featuring a repertoire that includes Afrikaans, English, Zulu, Xhosa, and Sotho songs.

“The idea came from witnessing the high standard of music and discipline within local school choirs,” said UFS choir conductor Werner Stander. “We were so surprised by the talent of our high school choirs in our city, and we decided to invite them to be a part of this wonderful opportunity.

“Singing (unifies), and we hope that by connecting school choirs with the UFS choir, it will foster relationships and networks that strengthen the choral tradition in the region.”

The choirs were chosen not just because they stand out but also because of their musical excellence and due to their diverse repertoires, cultural representation, and the vibrant energy they bring to the stage, he said.

The UFS choir sees this event as an opportunity to welcome future singers and collaborators, and it is excited to network and form connections with the high school participants, some of whom may one day join the university choir when they further their studies at UFS.

“Choirs teach young people discipline and camaraderie skills that they carry into other areas of life. Young singers are tomorrow’s leaders, and nurturing their musical journey is crucial,” said Stander.

Audiences are to expect passionate performances and top-tier musical expression from each choir, showcasing the best that Bloemfontein’s youth has to offer.
