The Northern Cape’s healthcare sector may be poised for a transformation following a visit by health minister Aaron Motsoaledi.

The minister’s visit on Friday (8/8) included a meeting with Premier Dr. Zamani Saul, the provincial department of health, other health stakeholders, and various labor unions, including Denosa, Hospersa, Nehawu, PSA, and Nupsaw.

The minister addressed union concerns about the health ombudsman’s recent report. The report has revealed severe systemic failures leading to patient deaths and human rights violations at the Northern Cape Mental Health Hospital and the Robert Sobukwe Hospital.

Motsoaledi explained the proper appeal procedures involving a three-member tribunal system and discussed key improvements such as hiring healthcare workers, procuring beds and linens, and increasing staffing levels.

This move is a crucial step in a broader effort to revitalise the province’s health services, Motsoaledi said.

The minister’s visit was part of a series of strategic engagements aimed at addressing the province’s healthcare challenges head-on. Site visits to both hospitals named in the report were conducted at the end of the visit to assess the situation firsthand and begin implementing the ombudsman’s recommendations.

Meanwhile, the investigation into this matter is still in process, with the authorities accused in many cases of mismanagement of funds or theft.

According to Northern Cape Health MEC Maruping Lekwene, the foundation for this renewed effort to tackle the province’s healthcare challenges was laid during a critical retreat held on 5 and 6 November last year. The retreat brought together a diverse group of experts, including specialists and senior staff members from national bodies, to break down the challenges facing the province’s health system.
