Empowering Free State communities: Partnership for sustainable livelihoods─── REFILWE BEKANE 09:00 Wed, 20 Aug 2025

In a display of community empowerment, the Free State department of social development’s community development unit, in partnership with Kemophomodi Co-operative Ltd, recently hosted an agro-processing training programme.
The initiative aimed to equip beneficiaries from department-funded CNDCs (Pele Ya Pele and Bram Fisher) and unemployed women from Grassland, Ward 8, with practical skills to build sustainable livelihoods and boost the local economy. The training focused on essential agro-processing skills, with a strong emphasis on hygiene and safety standards, said Kemophomodi Cooperative Ltd director Keabetswe Itumeleng.
“The skill that Kemohopodi Cooperative gave to women is the skills for agro-pprocessing, where you have to start working, you have to clean first, you have to clean your hands, those procedures of hygiene, until you go to the processing of vegetables. It was the skill that we gave the women from the community, from social development,” said Itumeleng.
While the journey was initially challenging due to a lack of equipment, the co-operative found support from various stakeholders, most notably the department of agriculture.
This support led to the acquisition of essential machinery and a new workspace, paving the way for the cooperative to expand its operations and begin its work in community training.
Kemophomodi’s long-term vision extends far beyond the Free State. The cooperative aims to train people across all of South Africa, empowering individuals and contributing to the national economy.
Future-focused approach
In September, they plan to take their skills to Thaba Nchu, where they will continue their work to assist unemployed individuals in the area. Itumeleng said the co-operative sees a future where they can grow their training initiatives and provide more opportunities for communities.
The company is currently seeking additional funding to further develop its programs and continue its mission of social upliftment.
This future-focused approach, combined with its strong partnerships, positions Kemophomodi Cooperative Ltd as a key player in fostering economic independence and building resilient communities across the country.
