An investigation is underway in Potchefstroom following a series of interconnected criminal incidents on Tuesday (9/9). It began with a reported murder and attempted murder neat Leeudoringstad.

The operation, led by acting provincial commissioner Maj. Gen Patrick Asaneng has resulted in the arrest of seven people and the confiscation of firearms and suspected stolen property. The police were initially dispatched to a crime scene after seven colleagues, travelling from Limpopo to the Northern Cape, came under fire.

“Upon arrival on the scene, the team confirmed the death of a male reported to be a Limpopo ANC Youth League member,” said Brig Sabata Mokgwabone.

The police described the car that was shooting at their vehicle, as well as a description of other cars that were involved. Nobody else was hurt in the shooting.

A police patrol located one of the vehicles fitting a description provided by the witnesses. “The vehicle was involved in an accident after the driver had lost control.”

The police questioned the driver and a passenger. They said they were part of a private security company that Transnet had contracted, and they were chasing a car that had stolen Transnet cables before the collision.

Ongoing investigation

They were immediately arrested after the police found two firearms, a rifle and a pistol in their possession.

The Tactical Response Team (TRT) later discovered a black Suzuki that matched the description of the car. They stopped and searched it, and five people were taken into custody after they couldn’t explain why they had the cables.

They allegedly told police they were running after being chased and shot at by people in a car that looked like it was in an accident. There will soon be more arrests made as part of this ongoing investigation.
