Bloemhof, a small town in North West lies in the Bophirima region.
Established in 1864 on the Klipfontein farm along the Vaal River, Bloemhof came into being following the discovery of diamonds in the area. Its name, meaning "floral garden" in Afrikaans, was inspired by the abundance of flowers seen by HMS Birkenhead survivor John Barclay.
Recently, Bloemhof earned the prestigious title of Kwêla Dorp van die Jaar 2025, an award sponsored by kykNET. Louis Coetzee, retired reserve manager of the Bloemhof Dam Nature Reserve, said on 1 November, people can come and enjoy the party with lots of singers and lots of stalls at the nature reserve.
The town is surrounded by three nature reserves, including the world-renowned Bloemhof Dam Nature Reserve.“In 2027, the World Angling Games will also be taking part there.”
