The Free State police are continuing to clamp down on cable theft suspects.

On Friday (19/9), two suspects were arrested after being found in possession of copper cables.

It is alleged while the members attached to Odendaalsrus Crime Prevention Unit were busy with their crime combating duties in Kutlwanong. They spotted two African males carrying suspicious-looking cables. Police stopped both alleged suspects and requested to search them.

“Permission to search was granted. During the search, police discovered the suspects were in possession of suspected stolen copper cables, a hacksaw, and pliers. The two males could not provide reasonable explanations for being in possession of the copper cables.

‘Confiscated 17,1kg of copper cables’

“Role players from Telkom identified the copper cables,” said Free State police spokesperson sergeant Palesa Thabana.

Police confiscated 17,1kg of copper cables with an estimated value of R8,000, one hacksaw, and a pair of pliers.

The two suspects are facing charges of tampering with essential infrastructure, possession of copper cables, and possession of housebreaking implements. They are expected to appear in the Odendaalsrus Magistrate's Court on Monday (22/9).
